Thomas Built Buses, along with Detroit, soon will launch some of the most efficient, powerful, reliable and, most important, clean diesel engines on the market. In 2018, the new Detroit™ DD5™ and DD8™ will debut, after being engineered from the ground up to change the diesel engine as you know it.
Let’s get to know these new engines a bit more.
Meet the DD5 – The DD5 engine, which is the latest in medium-duty engine technology, will deliver power, performance and best-in-class fuel economy and reliability.
Suited for the Saf-T-Liner® C2, it was designed to offer a low overall total cost of ownership and make serviceability a breeze.
It features top-load oil and fuel filters and the longest service intervals in its class, with up to 45,000-mile oil and fuel filter change intervals.*
Meet the DD8 – The Detroit DD8 engine is a 7.7L in-Line 6-cylinder medium duty engine with specific development for the Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner® HDX. Power and performance? Yes, it has both! It boasts a horsepower range of 260-300HP and a torque range of 660 – 860 lb.-ft.
Much like the DD5, the DD8 will decrease your fleet’s total cost of ownership with longer maintenance intervals and improved fuel efficiency.
Both the DD5 and DD8 engine, which meet 2017 Greenhouse Gas (GHG17) standards, utilize a global medium-duty engine platform that benefits the pupil transportation market particularly well. Both engines employ innovative technology such as variable exhaust cam phasing, which allows additional heat to the exhaust stream. This new technology enables efficient operation of the aftertreatment system in low speed stop-and-go operations, which is ideal for school buses. What does this mean for you? Aftertreatment headaches of your current engines will become a thing of the past.
Both engines also come with the most advanced connectivity platform in the pupil transportation industry, Detroit™ Connect Virtual Technician℠ remote diagnostic service. Virtual Technician will help you make informed maintenance decisions, so you only service your buses when needed. When one of your buses needs to go into the shop, Virtual Technician, with the backing of the experts at the Detroit Customer Support Center, will provide access to the most in-depth information available to get your bus repaired as quickly and accurately as possible, improving uptime.
The Detroit DD5 and the Detroit DD8 will be available for order in 2018 from any Thomas Built Buses dealer.
