HIGH POINT, N.C. – Dec. 22, 2016 – Thomas Built Buses and its employees have donated 274 bicycles to the students of Oak Hill Elementary, an elementary school in a low-income area of High Point, N.C.
“We are all blessed to be part of this extraordinary company and community,” said Caley Edgerly, president and CEO of Thomas Built Buses. “It is always a privilege to support our local extended family, Oak Hill Elementary. This year, we hope that these bicycles for deserving children will make their Christmas a little bit brighter. These children truly have won our hearts.”
The people at Thomas Built Buses began their partnership with Oak Hill Elementary five years ago when the school was ranked among the lowest five percent in the state of North Carolina. Through the years, the team at Thomas Built has invested time, money and resources in Oak Hill and has helped the school to become one of the highest performing Title 1 schools in the state and a model for other schools across the nation.
Oak Hill Elementary School, located less than a mile from the Thomas Built Buses headquarters, is in one of the poorest economic neighborhoods of High Point, N.C. Ninety-nine percent of the students enrolled at the school are eligible for free or reduced-price lunches; many of the children come from single parent homes, and 54 percent of the children speak a language other than English as their primary language. In total, 18 different languages are spoken at the school.
