HIGH POINT, N.C. … The latest model of the popular Saf-T-Liner® school bus is now available and in full production. The transit-style, rear-engine Saf-T-Liner HDX is available with a variety of engine choices, including the Mercedes-Benz MBE900 engines.
The Saf-T-Liner HDX chassis improvements include a heavy-duty steel frame with an “S” frame engine cradle for easier engine access.
“The ‘S’ frame section allows for a better organized engine compartment and greater accessibility for maintenance,” said Ken Hedgecock, director of North American school bus sales for Thomas Built Buses.
Other enhancements include a hydraulic fan drive system, betaweld radiator with bolted end tanks, greaseless front and rear suspension with heavy-duty shock absorbers, and a two-stage air cleaner for enhanced filtration. The electrical system has also been refined with updated printed circuit board technology.
“The Saf-T-Liner HDX keeps its distinctive exterior appearance that has set it apart from every other school bus on the road and it also has the latest technology to match its
good looks,” Hedgecock said. “Its impressive list of options and 66-90 passenger capacities make it suitable for fleets with a wide range of operating conditions.”
Engine Options
The Saf-T-Liner HDX is available with a choice of fuel-efficient engines, including the Mercedes-Benz MBE900 series diesel engines. Engineered by DaimlerChrysler Powersystems, MBE900 engines feature advanced electronic controls, a unique fuel injection system, quiet operation, extended maintenance cycles, and a five year/unlimited mile warranty.
“The MBE 900 engine generates high torque levels at lower rpm levels for superior low-end driving power and excellent hill-climbing ability,” Hedgecock said. “This engine also provides a quiet, smooth ride for passengers.”
The Saf-T-Liner HDX is available with the 6.4-liter MBE900 series up to 280 hp, Caterpillar 3126 up to 300 hp, Cummins ISC up to 300 hp, and John Deere CNG power at 250 hp. The Saf-T-Liner EF, front-engine transit style bus, is available with the Caterpillar 3126 up to 250 hp and the Cummins ISC up to 250 hp.
With the addition of the Saf-T-Liner HDX, Thomas will discontinue manufacturing the Saf-T-Liner ER and HD.
