Detroit Diesel Engines Lead in Innovation

Harnessing new energy sources and emerging technologies, Detroit has set new standards for green technology in the trucking industry and is now bringing those technologies to the school bus market.
Detroit engines are proven, reliable, efficient and offer a low total cost of ownership. They are also green. Very green. The Detroit line of heavy-duty engines equipped with BlueTEC® emissions technology has reduced greenhouse gas emissions while boosting fuel economy and efficiency. And the new DD5™ and DD8™ engines are no different. Detroit takes great pride in being a good global citizen while utilizing technology and innovations to benefit customers and lessen the environmental impact in the communities they serve.
Innovation Continues with the DD5 and DD8 Engines
Today, Detroit offers the latest in medium-duty school bus diesel engine technology with the introduction of the DD5 and DD8. Both engines offer unsurpassed efficiency and exceptional endurance, while achieving the longest maintenance intervals in the industry with best-in-class emissions. Both engines meet 2017 Greenhouse Gas (GHG17) and 2016 OBD (OBD16) compliance.
These engines will deliver best-in-class fuel economy and reliability with a B10 life of 400,000 miles. The DD5, in particular, will come with top load oil and fuel filters for easier serviceability and boasts the longest service intervals in its class with up to 45,000-mile oil and fuel filter change intervals*. In addition, both engines will come equipped with Detroit™ Connect Virtual Technician℠ remote diagnostic service to reduce downtime, lower maintenance costs and enhance the ease of serviceability.
But let’s not forget that these engines are powerful. The four-cylinder Detroit™ DD5™ engine features up to 240 horsepower and up to 660 lb-ft of torque. It’s small but mighty, and comes equipped with state-of-the-art variable cam-phasing technology for efficient aftertreatment system performance. This revolutionary aftertreatment system allows additional heat to the exhaust stream, enabling efficient operation of the aftertreatment system in low-speed stop and go operations.
The Detroit reputation for cutting-edge industry platforms and innovative products is well-established and widely recognized. With the launch of these two new engine platforms, the innovation continues.
